Google Bans iGaming Ads in Nigeria

As of January 8, Google introduced strict restrictions on the placement of gambling product and service ads in Nigeria. This decision affects:

  • Promotional materials — coupons, bonus codes
  • Educational materials — books, eBooks
  • Information on gambling — tips, forecasts, odds

Such ads are now completely banned on all Google platforms for users in Nigeria.

Reason for the Ban

The restrictions were the result of a decision by the Nigerian Supreme Court, which annulled the National Lottery Act of 2005. As a result, the powers to regulate gambling were transferred from the federal government to local state authorities.

This court ruling ended years of disputes between the federal government and state authorities. For example, Lagos State had long argued that lotteries were not part of the federal government’s exclusive powers and should be regulated by local authorities.

How Regulation Will Change

Level of Government Authorities
Federal Government Regulates gambling only in the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja)
State Authorities Set their own rules and issue licenses for gambling operators

Impact on the Industry

The Google ad ban significantly impacts the online gambling market in Nigeria:

  • Operators will need to find alternative ways to promote their services.
  • Local regulators will be able to more effectively control gambling platforms’ activities.
  • Users will encounter fewer ads for gambling games online.

This tightening of rules aims to strengthen oversight over the iGaming industry and protect users’ interests.
