Nepal blocks iGaming websites and applications

In Nepal, on March 29 the government ordered the blocking of all iGaming operators’ websites and applications as part of a 100-point reform program.

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), together with internet service providers, carried out the blocking within 24 hours.

Reasons for the iGaming ban

According to a representative of the Ministry of Communication, current legislation prohibits the activities of iGaming operators.

Legal framework

This refers to the Criminal Code 2074 (2017) and the Advertising Act, which ban online gambling, its facilitation, and its promotion.

Liability for violations

Violators face confiscation of income as well as criminal penalties.

Possible sanctions

Penalties include up to one year of imprisonment and a fine of up to ~$66.
