In Thailand, a Female Gambler Sentenced to Death for Poisoning 15 People

The First Female Serial Killer in Thailand

In Thailand, a 36-year-old woman named S.R., known as “Am Cyanide”, has been sentenced to death for the murder of 15 people. She poisoned her victims with cyanide after borrowing large sums of money from them to settle online gambling debts.

She became the first female serial killer in Thailand’s history. Out of the 15 poisoned victims, 14 died. Her victims were mostly close friends and acquaintances to whom she owed money.

How the Murders Took Place

According to the investigation, the murders began in 2015. S.R. would find people who could lend her significant amounts of money and then poison them with cyanide. In one case, she received 300,000 baht (around $8,700) from a victim, who soon died.

In April 2023, one of the murders led to a major investigation. That day, a ritual to release fish into the Mae Klong River was taking place in the Kanchanaburi province. After the event, one of the participants, a friend of S.R., suddenly passed away. A toxicology report revealed cyanide in her system, and the police linked the deceased to “Am Cyanide”. It was later discovered that she was involved in 14 other similar cases.

The Trial and Sentence

S.R. faces over 80 charges. In the first trial, she was found guilty of the murder of her friend, known by the initials S.K., and sentenced to death. However, 13 more trials remain for other murder cases.

In Thailand, the death penalty is a legal form of punishment. The last execution took place in 2018, when a criminal was put to death by lethal injection. Before that, over 300 people were executed by shooting.

Cyanide as a Weapon of Murder

Cyanide is a chemical compound that can be deadly to humans. It is used in industry for metal processing, but it is also known as a poisonous substance used in chemical weapons during World War I. In the case of “Am Cyanide”, this poison became the primary tool of the crimes.

Now, S.R. awaits the execution of her sentence or a potential appeal. Her case has caused a huge stir in society, as it is the first case of serial killing by a woman in the country.
