Angry Gamblers Behind 48% of Abusive Posts Towards Tennis Players
According to the ‘Threat Matrix’ monitoring system, which tracks posts on social media platforms such as X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, in 2023, 12,000 abusive posts were identified towards tennis players. This figure was revealed after analyzing 2.47 million tennis-related posts published from January to October.
What is the ‘Threat Matrix’ System?
‘Threat Matrix’ is a system that uses artificial intelligence to monitor and analyze posts on social media. Since its launch, the system has tracked various forms of aggression, including threats and abuse directed at tennis players. In 2023, the system analyzed 2.47 million posts, of which around 12,000 violated platform guidelines. These posts were flagged for removal, and in cases of serious violations, accounts were blocked.
The Role of Gamblers in Abuse
Gamblers have been especially active among the aggressors. According to the system, 48% of the abusive posts were directed at tennis players due to unsuccessful bets. Gamblers express their emotions on social media, often using aggressive language towards players who, in their opinion, failed to meet expectations.
Processing Aggression Cases
The ‘Threat Matrix’ system not only tracks and filters aggressive posts but also sends data to platforms for removal. In cases of severe violations, such as threats of murder or other criminal offenses, the data is forwarded to law enforcement agencies. As a result of the system’s work, many accounts that regularly spread abuse were blocked.
Support for Tennis Players
Many professional tennis players support the ‘Threat Matrix’ system. For example, former world number one Victoria Azarenka emphasized the importance of implementing such technologies to create a healthier online environment. She also pointed out that tennis players should not have to face hatred and threats on the internet.
Other players, such as Caroline Garcia and Jessica Pegula, have also expressed their support for the system. They shared their experiences with constant threats and highlighted the importance of combating online aggression.
How the System Protects Players
The ‘Threat Matrix’ system operates in 39 languages and protects over 7,000 players participating in international tournaments such as Wimbledon and the US Open. In addition to tennis players, the system also safeguards referees and other tournament participants.
Without initiatives like ‘Threat Matrix’, the aggression towards players could continue to grow, violating their personal lives and professional careers. It is important that the system continues to develop and protects players from online threats, contributing to a safer and healthier digital space for all.
