Amsterdam Court Orders BetCity Employee to Pay €495K

In the Netherlands, on February 13, the Amsterdam court ordered a former customer support employee of iGaming operator BetCity (Betent B.V.) to compensate damages caused by the unjustified issuance of free bets totaling €495.9K to four clients.

Free Bet Scheme and Bypassing Procedures

Four clients provided their accounts to carry out the scheme. The employee deliberately bypassed internal procedures and enabled withdrawals below the fraud control threshold.

The total volume of transactions through gaming accounts amounted to €401.6K.

Court’s Position

The court ruled that the employee’s actions were intentional. The defense’s arguments regarding insufficient oversight by BetCity were rejected.

The argument that the defendant suffered from gambling addiction was also dismissed.

Compensation Amount

The employee’s personal liability exceeded €158K.

In addition, he will pay more than €86K jointly with one of the players:

  • personal liability — over €158K;
  • joint liability — more than €86K.
