OpenAI is creating an X competitor with image generation: what we know about the new project

OpenAI is testing its own social network

Inside OpenAI, a new social platform similar to X (formerly Twitter) is being actively tested, featuring integrated image generation powered by ChatGPT.

There has been no official announcement yet, but the project is already being discussed with external experts, according to The Verge.

It’s unclear whether this will be a standalone app or integrated into ChatGPT, which in March 2025 became the most downloaded app in the world.

Such a platform could strengthen OpenAI’s market position and intensify the rivalry with Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.

What we know about OpenAI’s new social network

The project is in its early stages, but there is already an internal prototype combining a social feed and AI-powered image generation. Key features under discussion include:

  • A content feed similar to X
  • Built-in image generation via ChatGPT
  • Potential integration with the current ChatGPT app
  • Focus on real user data for training AI

This approach would give OpenAI a stream of live data, similar to how Meta uses Facebook and Instagram data to train Llama, and Musk’s Grok analyzes X in real time.

Why OpenAI is doing this

Launching a social platform would allow the company to:

  • Collect its own user data for model training
  • Increase user engagement
  • Expand the use cases of ChatGPT
  • Strengthen its competitive position against X and Meta

According to an employee at another AI lab, “The integration of Grok into X makes everyone jealous — especially because of how people use it to create viral posts.”

Conflict with Musk and Zuckerberg

Elon Musk offered to buy OpenAI for $97.4 billion, to which Sam Altman jokingly replied:

“No thanks. But we could buy X for $9.74 billion.”

Meanwhile, Meta is developing its own AI assistant app that will also include a social feed. This will further intensify the competition among tech giants.

What’s next

It’s still unclear whether the project will see the light of day. But the mere fact of its existence shows that OpenAI is exploring new avenues for growth and applications for its technologies.

If the social network launches, we’re in for an exciting new phase in the AI race between the biggest companies.
