Closure of Casino Cosmopol
Casino Cosmopol showed the largest revenue decline — 60%, due to the final closure of all land-based casinos in Sweden. In Q1 2025, only one venue in Stockholm was still operating, but it was also closed in April.
Casino Cosmopol, previously operated by Svenska Spel, included four branches: in Sundsvall, Gothenburg, Malmö, and Stockholm. All were closed by decision of the Riksdag, which ruled that such establishments are “no longer relevant” due to declining footfall and revenue.
Online Gambling Segment Remains Core
Online gambling and sports betting make up the majority of market revenue. However, the segment saw a slight decrease of 0.2%, suggesting potential stagnation.
The only growing segment was charity lotteries, which increased by 3.5% compared to the same period in 2024.
Growth in Spelpaus Users
The self-exclusion service Spelpaus continues to gain popularity. In Q1 2025, the number of registered users reached 125,000, up 3.5% from the previous quarter.
- Q4 2024: 120,600 users
- Q3 2024: 5.9% increase
- Launched in 2019
- 100,000 users reached in October 2023
According to the 2024 annual report, 65% of Swedes are aware of Spelpaus.
Problems with Illegal Operators
Despite rising awareness, illegal operators remain an issue. A 2023 study showed that 49% of players registered with Spelpaus breached the ban by playing on offshore sites.
Spelinspektionen is calling for stricter control over unlicensed platforms. Recently, the regulator banned Satoshi Gaming Group from operating.
