Google Testifies in Probe Over Illegal Gambling Ads

Representatives from Google appeared before India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) on July 28 after missing an initial summons on July 21. Meta, on the other hand, ignored the summons for the second time.

Why Google and Meta Were Summoned

India’s Enforcement Directorate is investigating the promotion of illegal online betting and gambling platforms. According to PTI, the probe focuses on several digital platforms that allegedly hosted links to unlawful gambling sites and promoted them via social media and digital ads.

As part of this investigation, both Google and Meta were summoned on July 21. Neither company complied by the initial deadline. Google later requested a delay to gather necessary documentation and ultimately appeared on July 28. Meta did not respond to the summons a second time.

What Documents Google Provided

According to PTI, Google submitted the requested documents to the ED. The agency is also believed to have recorded a statement from the company’s compliance officer under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

A Google spokesperson stated:

We are committed to maintaining the integrity of our platforms by prohibiting the promotion of illegal gambling content. We are fully cooperating with investigative authorities to hold violators accountable and ensure user safety.

Potential Consequences for Meta

It remains unclear whether ED will take action against Meta for repeatedly ignoring the summons. Under Indian law, failing to respond to law enforcement can lead to both administrative and legal consequences.

Public Figures and Scope of the Investigation

The ED’s investigation extends beyond Google and Meta. Several public figures — including actors and athletes — are also under scrutiny for promoting these gambling platforms. Among those named are:

  • Prashanth Raj
  • Vijay Deverakonda
  • Rana Daggubati

A total of 29 celebrities are suspected of violating India’s Public Gambling Act of 1867.

Alleged Violations Under Investigation

According to ED, the platforms being investigated may be involved in the following illegal activities:

  • Money laundering
  • User fraud
  • Large-scale tax evasion

Major Platforms Under Scrutiny

Mahadev Online Book Illegal operations, money laundering Chhattisgarh
Unnamed Platforms Hosting gambling links, social media promotion Pan-India

Google’s Cooperation With the Probe

Unlike Meta, Google has shown full willingness to cooperate with the ED. The company submitted documents, issued an official statement, and is actively participating in the investigation to clarify the facts of the case.

Conclusion

The ED investigation highlights serious concerns around the regulation of digital advertising and legal compliance. Platforms must prevent the promotion of unlawful content — especially in high-risk sectors like gambling. Google has reaffirmed its commitment to these responsibilities, while Meta’s noncompliance continues to raise red flags.
