Italian iGaming market revenue reached €5 billion in 2024
In 2024, the Italian online gambling market showed impressive growth, reaching a gross gaming revenue (GGR) of €5 billion, an 11% increase compared to the previous year. The main factor behind this increase was a 12% rise in betting turnover, which grew from €65 billion to €73 billion.
Key Growth Sectors
Online casinos and other games: This segment, which includes casinos, poker, and bingo, saw a 16% growth, with a GGR of €3.2 billion. Online games continue to gain popularity in Italy.
Betting: The online betting sector’s GGR increased by 11%, reaching €1.843 billion, with a total turnover of €16 billion.
Market Leaders and Competition
- Gruppo Lottomatica: The undisputed market leader with a 29% market share. In 2024, the company significantly strengthened its position after its listing on the Milan Stock Exchange and the expansion of its brands (Goldbet, Betflag, Planetwin365, Totosì).
- Flutter International: Holding 22.7% of the market, the company significantly increased its share following the acquisition of Snaitech for €2.3 billion. It is expected that its share will grow to 30% by 2025.
- Entain: Lost ground, reducing its share from 11.1% to 10.3% due to increasing competition.
Outlook for 2025
In the coming months, market competition is set to intensify. Flutter is expanding its presence following the acquisition of Snaitech, a deal that could significantly reshape the online betting sector. The company plans to integrate resources from both businesses, strengthening its position and broadening its influence.
Regulatory Changes
2024 was also marked by legislative changes. New licensing requirements for operators came into effect in Italy. The license now costs €7 million (up from €200,000 previously), and its duration is 9 years. Operators are required to pay 3% of GGR after tax. It is important to note that the licensing process for new entrants will be open from March 31 to May 31, 2025, and competition for licenses is expected to intensify.
Looking Ahead
The Italian online gambling market will continue to grow, supported by new legislative initiatives and increasing competition. In 2025, further changes can be expected, with new players entering the market and established players like Lottomatica and Flutter battling for leadership.
