Slowing Down Online Slots: Why It Matters

The Impact of Slot Speed on Gambling

Paddy Power co-founder Stewart Kenny has called for slowing down online slots to reduce their negative impact on players. He noted that a short pause between a bet and the outcome makes the process continuous, causing users to lose control over their budgets.

New Restrictions for Online Slots

Starting in April 2025, new rules will be introduced in the UK:

  • For players over 25 years old, the maximum bet will be £5 per spin.
  • For ages 18-24, the limit will be £2 per spin.

These measures were adopted following a review of the 2005 Gambling Act, but Kenny believes that bet limits alone are not enough. In his view, the key issue remains the high speed of spins.

Why Are Slots Addictive?

Kenny explains that:

  • The gap between a bet and its outcome is only a few seconds.
  • Rapid bet repetition increases engagement.
  • Bright effects and sounds enhance excitement.
  • “Near wins” create an illusion of victory, encouraging continued play.

Regulators’ and Operators’ Actions

In 2021, the UK introduced some restrictions:

  • Minimum spin speed – 2.5 seconds.
  • Ban on auto-spins and accelerated modes.
  • Elimination of “false wins” and other stimulating mechanics.

Nevertheless, gambling companies continue to generate enormous revenues from online slots. As of the end of 2024:

Metric Value
Slot revenue +15% (£709 million)
Number of spins +9% (23.9 billion per quarter)

Kenny on the Role of the State in Regulation

Stewart Kenny, who left Paddy Power in 2016, believes that the industry does not adequately protect vulnerable players. He criticizes bookmakers for promoting slots to users who initially engaged in traditional sports betting. In his opinion, the state should take a more active role in regulating the market, balancing entertainment freedom with player safety.
