Parliamentary Candidate Arrested in Thailand

In Thailand, the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau arrested a parliamentary candidate on charges related to the organisation of iGaming activities.

Arrest of a People’s Party Candidate

On January 14, 32-year-old Ratchapong Soisuwan, a parliamentary candidate from the People’s Party for Tak Province Constituency No. 2, was arrested in the Bueng Kum district of Bangkok.

The arrest was carried out by the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau of Thailand. The party said it was informed of the incident by the candidate’s lawyer late the previous evening.

Allegations of Online Gambling and Money Laundering

Investigators believe that Ratchapong Soisuwan was involved in the organisation of illegal online gambling activities through electronic channels.

Details of the Charges

The politician is accused of operating gambling activities without authorisation and money laundering as part of a prior conspiracy. According to law enforcement, the case involves links to an online gambling platform.

Response of the People’s Party

Following his arrest, Ratchapong Soisuwan was suspended from participating in the election. The leadership of the People’s Party held an emergency press conference.

Position of the Party Leadership

People’s Party leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut stated that the party follows a policy of zero tolerance toward any actions related to corruption, online gambling, fraud, drug trafficking, and other crimes.

He stressed that the party would not protect its members if they are suspected of illegal activity, regardless of their status or position. All accused individuals must go through the legal process.

Political Background of the Case

Ratchapong Soisuwan previously served as a member of parliament from Tak Province and returned to politics after the dissolution of the previous parliament.

Previous Incidents Within the Party

This is the second case ahead of the elections in which the People’s Party has faced issues involving its candidates. In December, candidate Bunyarith Raorungrot was replaced after being arrested in a money laundering case linked to drug trafficking.
